What are the Best Five Cities in Latin America to live in? Buenos Aires tops the list for the third year in a row

What are the Best Five Cities in Latin America to live in? Buenos Aires tops the list for the third year in a row

The results of the Global Liveability Index, developed by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), have recently been released. This report evaluates multiple factors, such as culture, stability, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and the environment, to determine the most liveable cities in the world.

Although the index is conducted globally, it also examines the most prominent cities in Latin America.

Topping the regional list, Buenos Aires is crowned the most liveable city in Latin America, maintaining this position for the third consecutive year. The Argentine capital stands out especially in education, with the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) ranked the best in the region according to the QS World University Rankings 2025. The city obtained scores ranging from 80 to 90 points in the categories evaluated.

Below are the top 5 of the best-rated Latin American cities to live in .

What are the 5 best cities in Latin America to live in? An Argentinean town tops the list.

1. Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Argentine capital achieves outstanding ratings in all five aspects of the global index, allowing it to reach first place in the region. Educational quality is one of its most vital points, highlighted by the academic excellence of the UBA.

In Buenos Aires, educational quality is one of its strongest points.

2. Montevideo, Uruguay

Like Buenos Aires, Montevideo ranks 80 and 90 points on the world index. However, its greatest strength lies in the environment. The Uruguayan capital is recognized for its high quality in terms of water drinkability, waste management and low polluting emissions, which ensures it is in second place.

Montevideo is an expensive city, partly because of its low population; while 3.5 million people live in Uruguay, England, which is smaller in area, is home to 56 million.

3. Santiago de Chile, Chile

Although Santiago de Chile managed to remain among the most livable cities with scores between 80 and 90 points, it dropped one position compared to the 2023 index. Its robust education and healthcare systems and investment in modern infrastructure that improves mobility and public services contribute to its third-place position.

4. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Ranked fourth, San Juan scores between 60 and 80 points. Its unique blend of history and modernity, with an over 500-year-old historic centre, is one factor that stands out in its cultural evaluation.

5. Lima, Peru

The Peruvian capital closes this top 5 with scores between 60 and 80 points. Lima is presented as a more liveable city than other large cities in the region, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, standing out for its infrastructure and services.

Lima’s infrastructure and services stand out.

In the global picture. Vienna, Austria, ranks as the best city to live in, achieving perfect scores in four of the five categories of the index. However,
it scored 93.5 out of 100 in the culture and environment category due to the lack of sporting events, which keeps it from total perfection.
